✖️ Multiply Matrix
Multiplication with the area model. Small facts show a grid of cells; bigger ones split into tens and ones so the rectangle breaks into easy parts.

What it practises
- Maths calculation: Arithmetic, fractions, ratios, powers and number bases at a steady pace.
- Spatial & visual perception: Judging angles, rotations, paths and positions in 2D and 3D space.
Games are good for calculation speed and accuracy. Mathematical concepts still need teaching and explanation.
Quick lesson: The area model
Multiplying two numbers gives the area of a rectangle with those sides. Split a side into tens and ones, find each smaller area, then add them: 14 × 6 = 10 × 6 + 4 × 6.
Check question
Using the area model, 23 × 4 = 20 × 4 + …
- 3 × 4
- 3 × 20
- 23 × 1
- 2 × 4
Answer: 3 × 4. 23 = 20 + 3, so 23 × 4 = 20 × 4 + 3 × 4 = 80 + 12 = 92.

- Sum Surge: Tap tiles that add up to the target number. Hit it exactly to clear them; go over and start again. Two tiles at first, then three and four.
- Number Line Runner: Tap when the runner reaches the target number. Only a few marks are labelled: whole numbers first, then negatives, decimals and fractions.
- Graph Hunter: Plot coordinates to hit drones. One quarter of the grid, then all four, then points on a straight line.
- Fraction Forge: Add fraction shards to fill the core exactly to the target line. The core is marked in a common denominator, so you can see which fractions are equal.
- Ratio Reactor: Mix coolant in the right ratio. Scale a recipe up, find an equivalent ratio, or share a total between two tanks.
- Percent Patch: Patch the shield to the right value: percentages of an amount, then increases and decreases, then “what percent is it?”.
