What it practises
- Memory & thinking speed: Holding patterns, sequences and positions in mind while the game moves on.
- Attention & focus: Picking out what matters, ignoring distractions and splitting attention between two things.
Practising a memory task makes you better at that task. We make no claim about memory in daily life.
Quick lesson: Working memory: keep updating
Working memory holds a few things in mind while you use them. In an n-back task you keep the last N positions and drop the oldest each step, so the list you are holding is always changing.
Check question
In 2-back, the lights go top-left, centre, top-left. Is the third one a match?
- No, it must match the one just before
- Yes, it matches the one 2 steps back
- No, matches only count on 3-back
- You can’t tell from three lights
Answer: Yes, it matches the one 2 steps back. Two steps before the third light was top-left, so it is a match.
